The one review I saw liked it. It strongly reminded me of the martial movies from the 80s of the kid who learns to overcome bullies yada yada. Ten years from now we'll see him on Late Night or something and they'll bring a clip of this up.
However Jackie Chan and Jet Li is awesome, also Monkey King. The obvious Monkey King stuff was lifted loosely from the legend but there's more if you know the legend. That was very very cool. Also 'assassin of revenge' girls talking in the third person is hot. Inexplicably so.

Speaking of the Monkey King, I have seriously considered flying to SC to see THIS. I really like Jamie Hewlett's designs for Monkey and I hope they do a full blown artbook of the pieces he did for it. A comic would be even better. Hopefully it will be popular enough to warrant a larger tour.

It snowed Friday night and continued into Saturday morning when I left for work. I think this beats Canada's late snow unless theirs is still on the ground. Such a freakish state we have here.
A work friend was participating in an art crawl in St Paul. The building he lives in is set up for artists, i.e you produce stuff and have a commitment to making art you can live there and use the fascilities. It is an amazing place, I was expecting something ..seedier I guess but this place is great. The set up for the crawl was great, people's work on the walls directing them to the studio apartments (WANT) where the artists have stuff up and there to talk etc.
There were alot of people there despite the weekend being against them. Snow, wind, and the main highways to the areas closed (35W north of 62, part of 62, the 94's) didn't help anything.
I hung out there with the dude and shot the shit until the people got thick and I left him to do his business.
ITs interesting to see the different sorts of 'presentation' artists do, same as at cons. You've got people who do laid back chat like they're just some guy and others doing the 'muthafuckin rockstar' thing. This plus the work I did on Carth A+B makes me want to go AN since it's Tofu's last issue. Maybe get some feed back on A+B since no one's seen it. Unfortunatly that's likely a Bad End.
I have some ideas for Carth C (I'll need something new for Fallcon..should I go) since I want to get things linearly completed. A+B was an attempt to use advice I got from someone on style. I think with C I'll just say fuck style and working on weaknesses and just do how I like. It'll probably cute cuter and lack noses XD

The company art show is in June and I kinda blew my load last year;;; I need to come up some new stuff. New different stuff in general would help the con effort as well, since I was getting some stinkeye at Fallcon. Oddly enough it was love the year before.
My favorite WTF moment was when two girls were looking at my table-neighbor's Harly Quinn pic. They were all excited "We totally love jestergirls. it's so hard to find art of them you know?" We both looked at my open portfolio with two pages of jestergirls (Kannon was one). Incert Facepalm.jpg.
Whatever I work on it best be soon as school starts in August and it kills my free time and projects (or I work on both and it kills me). I'm debating the life drawing class. I need the skillz but drawing class kills the want to draw more :/ Since it's an advanced class maybe there'd be more of a tie between studets like there was at design school. Not some much in Drawing I, there most seemed to have this cautious 'wtf am I doing?' approach.

I was inking a pinup page my tofu entry and decided to use this brush pen I got on recommendation a couple months back.

Holy wow.

The Pentel Pocket Brush is the best damn brush pen I've ever used, hell it's about the best pen I've ever used. The tip actually maintains it's shape past the usual 2 minutes and can do actual line weight variation. If you like to hand ink comics/illos I whole heartedly recommend it.
It doesn't seem to be particularly common, I had to go to Wet Paint in St Paul to get one. It runs about $20 so that's abit of an indicator that you've found the right one.

Back to editing pages.

Gary Gygax died today at only 69. He and Dave Arneson created the Dungeons and Dragons game way back in the day. His writing and game work had a distinctive flavor that drew my interest in the game and that drives me to seek out the old original modules (woohoo Tomb of Horrors!) with the original in jokes and references.
I had hoped to maybe play a Gygax run game at a con someday like the one I played in with Dave Arneson, but I'm a day late and a dollar short.

If you're not familiar with D&D understand that it was a major catalyst for every RPG around today. War gaming, JPRGs, MMORPG all have ties to the brown booklets and Chainmail rules.

I will not get stuck in obsessive project mode today. Today I will construct cards and prepare them for sending oh yes. (Really this would be secondary obsessive project mode)
I would have been on this sooner except for, of course, OPM and my brain's been hurting alot lately. I blame winter.

EDIT: I believe there is an universal law about running out of project materials after dark. I got to print and I've run out of postcard paper after using up the last finding certain print settings=CRAP. I shoot out into the black of night at the late hour of.. 7pm.
It seems to happen every time I have a project too. Invariably despite precautions something will come up short and thus a night time supply run. This is worse in the summer when dark equals nothing open.

However this is a boon today as Canon paper is FAR SUPERIOR to the foul smelling, 4x6.5! blotchfest that is Kodak postcard paper. Huzzah.

I go to print out (late) cards and I run out of photo magenta. Of course being as these are Xmas card red is a predominant colour.... XD;;

I got an email from Gaia admins saying I had 9 failed logins to my account. This is funny/strange since I logged into it once when the site first opened.. like what 6 years ago? God we're all old ;;;

I had the last week off work, it was both pleasant and horrible at the same time.

Since the cool thing to do when you have a blog is post about the year, I will do so.. Later cause my head hurts.

But for a short version 2007 was better than 2006 tho it started low with failed socialings, it got better even in that regard. Tho I was annoyed through alot of it XD
Only definite resolution I have right now is to get back into the shape I was before the whole work+classes+Fallcon mess >_< That and the get my stuff organized again after said mess.

I did infact pass my classes. I did actually get an A in drawing and on my classwork merit not previous work. Actually my previous work might have hindered my getting an A, it's hard to say.

The class was ok, it did improve my ability to draw actual objects quite abit. I would have liked more input and so on but the instructor felt I was too good to need it >.<;;; (Srsly on the final critique she was talking about when she'd go person to person to assist. "And then I see Dai working and he doesn't need any advise". Noo I need input, that's why I took a class! >.<).

One flaw was that she only really saw things from her veiw, in example, we were all drawing a still life arrangement on a table, urns, boxes etc. She comes by me and says 'Good but you wouldn't see so far into the top of the box, draw more of the front.' She turns to Nano-san who sits next to me 'Good but you've got too much of the front of the box there, you can see farther into it from here.' The thing is I'm a foot taller than the instructor and Nano-san's a foot shorter. This was even funnier with the guy who was 6'9" XD

I was concerned for my grade a couple times there, getting Bs and a C, but got a good grade on my midterm (tho others didn't). Considering the good final grades I think perhaps she was trying to scare people into working hard. But her wierd comments didn't help, trying to parse what she meant so you could improve was daunting at times.

For example on this drawing
Foo Dog classwork )
Ok back to CG'in

Also it seems Minnesota connected lj communities tend to die out pretty quickly.

Music:Fantastic Plastic Machine - Different Colors

Me and the bro were going through my review packet for my maths final. On a couple of the problems we couldn't figure out how the instructor got to the answer he had given (it had answers in the back so we could see if we were doing it right. Anything less would be sheer dickery.)
So my bro fires up Mathmatica, a prog for solving math problems. Better than a calculator since it can solve with variables and so on.
We all it does is spit out answers but no process. No help! Online searching is done and other people have had this issue as well. The useful answer is that the prog figures things out with machine code so it's processes won't resemble a normal humans.
Now here's the WTF part.
The other answers to the posters inquiry were 'Quit trying to cheat''Try paying attention in class''Read the book''If you listened to your instructor you'd know'.
Now I know some people would use it to cheat, and some people on boards live just to throw out dick responses like this but, wtf? The ones replying back with 'read the book' or 'Your teacher undoubtedly explained this, quit trying to cheat' listed themselves at teachers too. Arrogant son's of whores, maybe people turn to a program to learn because your teaching is shit!

Thankfully my class is done (y'all don't have to listen to me talk about it anymore. Relief relief) and hopefully the horrid final won't sink my grade. I didn't do well overall, the teacher wasn't bad but his teaching style did not work with my learning style.
Two classes plus job doesn't work for me. I'm waiting to see if money for my life drawing class will come through on time. I've been waiting for years to take one especially since it's one of those fundemental things for an animator to have. Well if not I have freedoms and that's very good too.

Also WTF, what's up with all these torrents of dubbed anime? Are these fandubs or rips? Fansubbers have hid behind the questionable morality of bravely translating shows unavailable for legitimate purchase but what's the deal with the dubs? Also DUAL AUDIO WITH SUBS -USE IT! If you must release some dub give us the option to listen to something good.
anyway...

I love this song, it comes from the Louis Vitton commercial that I first encountered parts of at the Superflat exhibit (it's the only piece of fashion I can recognize and onlt because of the animation association. If only math were like that XD). It's Takashi Murakami designs directed by Mamoru Hosoda, (my hero) Koji Morimoto was involved in some manner as a couple sources put it but that maybe Studio 4*Cs involvment the motion looks right tho. It's a great short bit even as a commercial. Things like this are why I put some much into animation. Thanks to [info]mamichan for originally finding this.

EDIT: More Murakami. A short film with his trademark characters. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaE9VPY1xXk

And now I must work frantically on xmas cards. I've been asked for the new one (!?)

OHYEAH EDIT: Get final portfolio back on Thursday, am eagerly awaiting ensuing bizarre comments and sharing them XD

Permutations and combinations and numbers that go 8!/5!
This homework is due tomorrow and par for course it's made up of problems not at all covered by the book or the examples done. I also found another thing the teacher overlooked in teaching the principle of. One of those key things like 'The 'ones' in Pascals triangle are actually position 0, so don't count those'.
Every graded assignment and test is like a big fuck you.

Also not helping was the snow storm that had me stuck across town because EVERY road going south or east was bumper to bumper and dead stopped until around 8. >:/ Then another hour for the drive.

I have the xmas card idea, having the time/strength/will to implement is really doubtful this year :[

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

This year I've been busy!

Last Tuesday I pushed [info]nut_z in the mud (-17 points). Last Wednesday I invaded Iraq, broke it, and couldn't glue it back together before Mom got home (-1012 points). In March I set [info]doronjosama's puppy on fire (-66 points). In April I stole [info]afuji's purse (-30 points). Last Friday I pulled over and changed [info]jlunar's flat tire (15 points).

Overall, I've been naughty (-1110 points). For Christmas I deserve a lump of coal!

Sincerely,
daifu

I am cooker of turkeys.

Every year my job gives everyone a turkey. This year since there is no longer a freezer with adequate storage I had to cook it right away. I have never done this so I did some research on the internet on recipes. Went to the store and bought all the paraphernalia and spices and such like.
I was on a mission, I was going to make this turkey taste better than water plus vague bird, oh yes.
I made stuffing and spicy rub stuff combining the best sounding recipes and for good measure jammed a (opened) can of beer up its butt.

I made goddam delicious turkey. It is the best turkey I have ever had. Screw you 'alittle salt and pepper with butter'! It is tasty, hopefully it's epicness will survive to reheating for other family members so I may gloat in triumph (and offend the women folk of our clan who hold providence over the kitchenlands XD).
Undoubtedly my cooking prowess increases my marriability teehee XD XD

Gotta make pretty 10 good and big drawings tomorrow for the Drawing midterm.
I'm kinda proud at finishing the sheet.

I'm definitly cutting down to one class next semester. Either Statistics or Life Drawing.

I was looknig at Adam Warren's DevArt today and it reminded of a conversation I had at Fallcon with my table partner about websites. He asked about my DevArt artsite and I replied I didn't have one since I didn't have much for it.
He gave me this look XD. I lol'd, perhaps my veiw was an outdated one.

I know right now I'd rather be dissappointed in art than solving inequalities "using test points or graphically". F'king math, f'king college math education system. Also I have a unit test on my bday. This severly hampers my hopes for debaucheries :/

This is a page I did right after the whole Fallcon/Fargocon adventure. I was full of motivation to make some serious efforts at comics, a new style, and drawing drat lips. It was also going to put one pager 'pre-histories' in front of each chapter.
Well life got in the way and I'm just not that motivated for comics and trying to live that life, but I still found a purpose for that page as a Carth A cover.
It's the death of Atlantis BTW. Oooh secret origins. EDIT and covers! Input and opinions are appriciated! )
I still need to make some explainitory text for the inside cover. At some point I need to be 'obvious' and explain who everyone is. Darn my want of mystery. XD

I will reply to everyone's kind posts as soon as I'm squared away, sorry.
